What is Wilderness Trek?
A week long, summer back-packing trip to summit a mountain. Alongside the hiking, there is a distinct spiritual element to the week. Two Trek runs in the prior months will prove physical fitness as a requirement for this trip. This trip happens every other summer and occurs during the even-years.
 
Mandatory Trek Runs:
Wednesdays, May 13 & June 10 at 8:30 p.m. at the Conroe High School track. Everyone wanting to attend this trip will have to   run 2 miles under 20 minutes.
 
Itinerary:
  • Sunday, July 19: Meet at the church at 7:30 a.m. Vans are leaving no later than 8 a.m. Traveling to Amarillo by way of Abilene, staying in Amarillo at the University Church in Canyon.
  • Monday, July 20: Leaving Amarillo early and traveling to the trail-head of the mountain to begin our hike.
  • Tuesday, July 21-Friday, July 24: We will be hiking and on the mountain. We will have our long hike to our high camp, a rest day and solo time, we will attempt to summit, and then hike down to vans. We will end our hike with a shower at Hot Springs in Salida, CO. 
  • Saturday, July 25: Leave around 8 a.m. to travel back home. Estimated time of arrival is 7 p.m.
 
What to Bring:
Trek Clothing:
  • 4 pair socks – 2 lightweight and 2 heavy weight (wool or synthetic blend, non-cotton)
  • Adequate supply of underwear
  • Long underwear – top and bottom
  • 2-3 T-Shirts (non-cotton)
  • Long Sleeve Shirt (non-cotton)
  • Fleece pullover or zip-up
  • 2 Shorts
  • 1 long pants (non-jean)
  • Rain Pants (quality)
  • Rain Jacket (quality with hood)
  • Jacket with hood
  • 2 Hats – 1 for sun protection and 1 for warmth
  • Gloves
  • Hiking Boots or hiking Shoes (could be waterproof)
  • Second Pair of Closed Toed Shoes (for camp or if other shoes get wet)

Personal Gear:
  • Day-pack, like a school backpack (large enough for food, water, gear and extra clothes)
  • 2 One Quart or more Water Bottles (or a water bottle and water bladder)
  • Sunglasses
  • Sun Block with high SPF rating (travel size)
  • Lip Balm with SPF
  • Medicines (labeled)
  • Insect Repellent (travel size)
  • Deodorant (travel size)
  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste (travel size)
  • Toilet Paper (unroll enough for a week and put in a ziploc bag)
  • Spoon/Fork or Camping Spork
  • Large Camping Cup for  food and drink or small cup and plate
  • Small Flashlight or Headlamp
  • Whistle (required)
  • Small Bible
  • Writing Utensils
  • Ziploc Bags (to sort and carry personal gear)
  • 2 or more 55 Gallon Trash Bags (used to cover and keep packs dry)
  • Camera (optional)
Beginning & End of Trip Articles:
Clean clothes for the trip up and clean clothes for the final evening’s activities and the trip home. Clean towel and swimsuit for the shower and/or aquatic center.  You will also need to bring money for three meals.
Note:  Plan to leave your luggage and all extra articles in the trailer. They will be kept locked up and will be available when we return at the end of our hike.
 
Items Not to Bring:
Knives, firearms, fireworks, alcohol, tobacco products, illegal drugs and electronic devices (music devices, games, cellular phones, etc). These items may be prohibited by the Forest Service and could  take away from the  experience of a wilderness adventures.  If found, these items may be confiscated.
