The three page document we call 1 John is to a group of Christians who must have felt that their church and their world was coming unglued.  A significant number of the church has already left the fellowship and they are actively trying to get others to join them.  And the core of their faith in Jesus as the son of God, who became flesh and lived among His fellow humans, teaching, loving, serving and going to the cross as their Savior and Lord, is all being questioned.  As John writes these words to them his goal is clear though he does not say it until near the end – “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.  This is the confidence we have in approaching God; that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us” (1 John 5:13-14).  In fact, the entire fifth chapter of 1 John is all about the confidence and the assurance that these believers can have despite the seeming chaos going on all around them.  Amazingly, John uses the word “overcome” to describe these believers six times in 1 John.  The problem is that many Christians do not feel like “overcomers” – they feel more defeated than victorious.  The result is not only devastating for their faith journey with Christ but their lives offer a sad testimony for those who are not Christians looking from the outside in.  After all, who wants to climb aboard a sinking ship and live in fear and uncertainty on the way down! John does two important things in this message in 1 John: first, he reveals the lies that are robbing these Christians of their confidence in Christ and second, he reminds them of the truth of the gospel that sets us free, and calls them to live as “overcomers” because “God lives in you” (2:14; 4:4; 5:4, 5). How do you see yourself in Christ?  Are you an overcomer?  Do you live with such confidence in your faith that others who do not know Christ are drawn to Christ and to his church?

In a recent study done by the Barna Research Group they found that more than 70% of Christian believers feel very insecure and unequipped in sharing their faith.  What will this mean for the future when we already live in a Post-Christian culture and most churches face declining church membership and church involvement?

As we continue to seek to act upon the great commands to love God with our all and love our neighbors with that same passion, we desperately need to feel confident and assured in our faith to build relationships with our neighbors and friends who do not know Christ. God has a word for us through 1 John – in Christ we are overcomers – the lies holding us back are exposed and the truths that can set us free to live confident lives in Christ are held out to us with striking clarity.
