Our History
In 1925, a handful of Christians chose the county courthouse as a public meeting place in Conroe, Texas. After a few years, they were assisted by the Heights congregation in Houston, acquiring two lots near downtown Conroe, at 320 Collins Street.
Through contributions of local Christians and the sponsoring congregation, a frame building was erected in 1929. The inside consisted of wooden floors and "two rows of homemade benches," states Pam Arthur in an earlier written history. Guest preachers presented sermons and the women baked unleavened bread for communion. This original building was remodeled several times and a cornerstone, dated 1945, became a permanent fixture.
By 1955, the congregation had outgrown the Collins Street building. In hopes of completing a larger meeting place, several properties were acquired on North Frazier. This new home of Conroe Church of Christ was completed in 1957 and the new building was dedicated to the service of the Lord on July 7. The local newspaper, the Conroe Courier, carried a front-page photo and story highlighting the new church facility, with the headline, "$100,000 Church of Christ To Be Dedicated Sunday." The office, library and educational building were built in 1965. With continued growth, additional classrooms were needed and a house was purchased from the Harpers and converted to classrooms. A metal building was soon built in 1973 and named "The Fry Building" in honor of longtime friend and preacher, W.E. "Granddad Fry." The last construction at Frazier Street was the Huddle House for the teens in 1986.
In August 2008 we moved to our new church building and campus at 1860 Longmire Road. Several years ago we began praying about relocation and expansion to meet the needs of a growing community and a growing church. We just completed our Building for the Future Stewardship Enrichment Campaign and have launched the Sharing the Vision Campaign this summer. The new church campus provides excellent facilities on a 16.5 acre campus and is an answer to many prayers. The future is bright as we share the vision of God's love with the community and pass our faith on to future generations.
